Speech writer

I’m an Oregon-based freelance speechwriter who believes in the power of stories. One of graduate school’s real high points for me came during a workshop in narrative journalism. A respected writer, one whose cool prose is routinely praised as edgy and thoughtful, who at the time also happened to be immersing herself in the lives of stand-up comics for a book, singled me out in front of the class after I introduced myself and made a joke. “Zack,” she said, “has great comic timing.” Like the kid with the odd middle name mangled once by a substitute teacher, my classmates tease me to this day about the writer’s comment, especially when one of my jokes bombs. I can’t promise my clients an hour-long stand-up routine — I’m just not that funny — but I can promise to help them find the right story for the right time.

Giving a good speech is no different than sitting in front of the campfire and telling a good story. Know your audience. Know your objectives. Be strategic. And have great timing. I’ve helped university administrators, professionals and executives strategically tell their stories with speeches and talking points. Most frequently, I have helped prepare speakers for talks to donors, community organizations, professors, student athletes and even announcements when they’re the ones generously writing the check.
